New Paediatric First Aid Legislation for Nurseries and Preschools

From September the government is proposing new legislation that requires that all newly qualified child carers in addition to their childcare level 2 and 3 qualification, will need to have an up to date paediatric first aid training certificate.

The new  legislation will increase the numbers of child carers who will be fully first aid trained and will reassure parents that when they leave their children in nurseries they will be cared for by staff trained in paediatric first aid. At the moment for nursery settings and preschools, to meet the current legislation requirements, only one paediatric first aid trained member of staff is needed on-site, no matter how many children are in their care at the time.

It was the tragic death of nine-month-old Millie Thompson in 2012, and the following review by the Department for Education, that this legislation was scrutinised.  The relentless campaigning by the parents of Millie prompted these new proposals.

According to government figures this will add around 15,000 trained early years’ professionals to nurseries and pre schools.

Safe and Sound Training welcomes this new legislation. Its head of training Tina Lazarus said:

“We have always felt that all child carers working with children, whether they be in nurseries, pre schools or as nannies or au pairs, should regularly attend first aid courses and we are delighted with these new proposals.”

That said Safe and Sound has been providing paediatric first aid training for over 15 years and we have noticed that over the last few years many managers have been particularly diligent at ensuring that all their staff are properly first aid trained.  This new legislation will just ensure that those who have not been so diligent must now get their act together.

So why is this so important? Regular first aid training teaches you how to respond quickly and efficiently in an emergency situation. Knowing what to do can stop a minor accident becoming a major one and in the worst case scenario, make the difference between life and death.

Safe and Sound First Aid Courses are suitable for people who care for children in any professional setting, including au pairs, nannies, childminders, nursery and preschool workers, sport and leisure staff and crèche leaders

Our paediatric first aid courses run monthly in central London or we can teach on site at your school or nursery weekday or weekend, at no extra charge.

In addition to the traditional 2 day paediatric first aid course we also offer a blended course (1 day elearning plus 1 day of face to face training)and a 1 day Emergency Paediatric First Aid course.

On successful completion learners will receive a paediatric first aid certificate valid for 3 years. It can also be used as evidence for Level 2 and 3 child care qualifications.
