The Ultimate Guide to Christmas First Aid

02 February, 2021

The festive season is here, bringing warmth, celebration, and moments with friends and family.

But…

… Amid the excitement, Christmas is also one of the most common times for household accidents.

From kitchen mishaps to decorating injuries, understanding how to respond quickly and confidently can protect your loved ones from unnecessary harm.

At Safe and Sound, we are dedicated to helping households and workplaces stay protected through high-quality, accredited first aid training.

This comprehensive guide outlines the most frequent Christmas accidents and the safest ways to respond, while showcasing how our courses empower you with essential life-saving skills.

Understanding the Most Common Christmas Accidents

Kitchen Burns and Scalds

Cooking festive meals exposes you to boiling liquids, hot oil, and heated trays—conditions that significantly increase the risk of burns and scalds.

How to Respond

  • Cool the burn immediately under cool running water for at least 20 minutes.
  • Carefully remove any jewellery or tight clothing around the affected area BUT leave in place if it is stuck to the skin.
  • Do not apply ice, creams, or butter.
  • Cover the burn loosely with strips of cling film if the skin is broken.
  • Seek medical help for large, deep, or facial burns.

Our Emergency First Aid at Work and Paediatric First Aid courses (scroll down for links) provide in-depth, hands-on training on managing burns and recognising when urgent care is needed.

Cuts from Knives and Food Preparation

Christmas cooking often involves sharp knives, carving tools, and tin openers. Rushing or multitasking can easily lead to hand and finger lacerations.

How to Respond

  • Apply pressure using a clean cloth or sterile dressing to control bleeding.
  • Clean the wound gently once bleeding slows.
  • Cover with a sterile dressing.
  • Seek medical care if the cut is deep, won’t stop bleeding, or contains debris.

Our courses teach participants how to control bleeding effectively, apply dressings, and assess wound severity.

Choking During Christmas Meals

From turkey to nuts to festive sweets, choking is a serious risk—especially for children and older adults.

How to Respond

A young girl clutching her throat as if she is choking.
  • Encourage the person to cough if they can still breathe or talk.
  • If ineffective, deliver back blows followed by abdominal thrusts, alternating until the obstruction clears or help arrives.
  • Always call 999 for an ambulance if the person does not respond to the above treatment. Be prepare to start CPR if they become unconscious and stop breathing.

Safe and Sound’s First Aid for Parents and Basic Life Support courses (Links further down the page) train you in choking management using realistic manikins for maximum confidence.

Slips, Trips, and Falls

Cluttered floors, loose decorations, spilt drinks, and icy paths can easily cause falls—one of the most common Christmas-related injuries.

How to Respond

A person's feet are at an awkward angle as they slip on a banana skin.
  • Check for pain, swelling, or visible deformity.
  • Encourage the person to rest and raise the injured limb.
  • Avoid moving someone with suspected back, neck, or head injuries.
  • In severe cases, call emergency services immediately.

Our training equips you with the knowledge to assess injuries and recognise when urgent medical attention is required.

Ladder and Decorating Accidents

Putting up Christmas lights or reaching for high shelves can lead to falls, sprains, and even fractures.

How to Respond

A young family decorating a Christmas tree, with the father lifting his daughter up to place the star on top.
  • Support and immobilise the injured limb.
  • Do not attempt to straighten a limb that looks deformed.
  • For suspected fractures, call for professional medical assistance.

Safe and Sound’s First Aid at Work training provides detailed guidance on handling breaks, sprains, and strains safely and effectively.

Electrical Accidents

Faulty lights, overloaded sockets, or damaged wires can cause electrical shocks, burns, or even fires.

How to Respond

  • Switch off the power source, if safe.
  • Do not touch the person until the power is fully disconnected.
  • Check for responsiveness and breathing.
  • Begin CPR if necessary and call emergency services.

Electrocution management and CPR are core components of our advanced first aid courses.

Alcohol-Related Accidents

Injuries and illnesses often increase during the festive season due to excessive alcohol consumption.

Possible Issues Include:

  • Vomiting and risk of choking
  • Poor coordination leading to falls
  • Hypothermia from falling asleep in unsafe conditions

How to Respond:

  • Keep the person warm and in the recovery position.
  • Never leave an intoxicated person alone.
  • Call 999 for an ambulance if they are unresponsive or have slow, irregular breathing.

Our training includes practical CPR and recovery position techniques, ensuring you can respond effectively in emergencies.
